He started his political career as the ‘gram pradhan’ (village head) of the Ghorabanda panchayat. As he gained experience and trust, Soren rose through the ranks of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, becoming a senior and respected leader. In 1990, he was made the Jamshedpur East president of the JMM. He was a three-term Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Ghatshila Assembly constituency. He first won this seat in 2009 and served until 2014. After losing in 2014, he made a comeback in 2019, securing the seat again.
