Jaisalmer is on the edge of a big change. The desert city is set to get a major upgrade to its power system, bringing strong and steady electricity to homes, shops. all its growing needs. This crucial work starts now, promising an end to power problems and a brighter future for everyone in Jaisalmer as more people come to visit and live.
New Power Station Approved for Jaisalmer
A significant step has been taken to strengthen the electricity supply in Jaisalmer and nearby areas. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has approved land for a new, large power substation in Phusasar village, located in the Bhaniana area of Jaisalmer district. This approval was given on August 7, 2025. The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RRVPNL) will be in charge of building this 765 kilovolt (kV) power substation. The land set aside for this essential project covers a large area of 80 hectares. The main goal of this new substation is to make the electricity supply better and more stable in the western part of Rajasthan and the areas connected to it. Officials have stated that this substation will play a very essential part in making sure there is steady power for homes, farms. factories in the region. The government has made it clear that this move shows its strong dedication to making energy infrastructure better, especially in areas that are far away and near the border of the state. Once it starts working, the power substation is expected to lower the amount of power lost during sending and make voltage more even, which are common problems in areas that do not have many people, like Jaisalmer. This project will also help to connect the local power network better with the country’s main power grid, making the electricity distribution system in Rajasthan more stable and strong. This approval by the Chief Minister is seen as a quick administrative action to speed up the work. Now, the detailed technical and money-related steps for building the substation will be handled by RRVPNL, which will look after the planning, building. starting of the operation.
More Energy Coming from Sun Power
Jaisalmer has recently seen the start of several big sun power projects, making it a key place for clean energy. On April 18, 2025, a large sun power project with a peak capacity of 1. 3 gigawatts (GWp) was opened by ReNew, a leading company in renewable energy. This project, which is one of the biggest single-location sun power setups in India, was opened by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi. Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma. The project covers about 3,500 acres of land across several villages in the Pokran and Bhaniyana areas of Jaisalmer district. These villages include Rampuriya, Bhinajpura, Hastinapur. Masuriya. This sun power plant is expected to produce around 2,490 million units of electricity every year. This is enough power to meet the needs of almost five lakh (500,000) homes in Rajasthan. Beyond just making energy, the project will also help to cut down carbon gas pollution by about 2. 3 million tons each year, greatly helping the environment. A key part of this project is its focus on making things in India. All the solar panels used in this project were made in India. 90 percent of them were produced at ReNew’s advanced factory in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This shows support for the government’s aim of a self-reliant India. The electricity from this project will be sold to users in Rajasthan at a good price of Rs 2. 18 per unit. This makes it one of the cheaper clean energy sources in the area. Landowners in the project area will also get a steady income for 25 years through agreements to lease their unused land. Another crucial sun power project in Jaisalmer was started by Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL). On February 21, 2025, AGEL’s 250 megawatt (MW) sun power project at Bhimsar and Dwada in Jaisalmer district became active. With this plant starting, AGEL’s total working renewable energy capacity went up to 11,916. 1 MW. In a separate development, NTPC also started commercial operation of a 160 MW sun power project in Jaisalmer as part of its larger 320 MW Bhainsara solar project in September 2024.
Moving Power from Remote Areas
As Jaisalmer becomes a major center for sun and wind energy projects, there is a big need for good ways to move this power to where it is needed. The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has won projects to build inter-state transmission systems (ISTS) that will move 5. 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy from the Jaisalmer/Barmer region. This includes building a new 765/400/220 kV substation at Kurawar, which is part of a bigger plan. This work is part of a complete plan to build transmission systems for moving 75 GW of renewable energy capacity in Rajasthan by 2030. This includes 15 GW from wind power and 60 GW from sun power. These efforts aim to make sure that the energy produced in Jaisalmer’s desert region can be smoothly sent to areas across the state and beyond, which have high demand.
Storing Energy for Stable Supply
To make the power supply even more stable and handle the ups and downs of renewable energy sources like sun and wind, there are plans for large energy storage systems. Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL) has recently asked for bids for 500 MW/2,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This tender was announced on August 8, 2025. These planned projects will be connected to the 400 kV Jaisalmer-2 substation. The last date for companies to submit their bids for these projects is September 23, 2025. These battery storage systems are vital for making sure that even when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing, there is still a steady supply of power available.
Past and Future Outlook
Jaisalmer’s shift towards becoming a major energy hub highlights the state’s broader goal of making its power system stronger. There is a growing demand for energy due to increasing population and the growth of industries and defense facilities in western Rajasthan. The state government’s plans show a focus on making sure all homes, even in remote villages, get electricity and that there is a reliable power supply across the region. The move to expand renewable energy in areas like Jaisalmer is part of Rajasthan’s ambitious target to reach 90 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, playing a big part in India’s clean energy goals. But, this growth also brings some environmental worries. There have been concerns raised by activists and local people about the cutting down or burying of Khejri trees, which are very essential to the desert environment and local culture, to make space for sun power plants. This shows the need for careful land management as energy projects grow. Experts are also looking into ways to make sun power plants more effective, for example, by changing the angle of solar panels with the seasons, which could increase power output by about 8 to 9 percent in places like Jaisalmer. The government has stressed that strengthening the energy setup in remote and border areas is a key commitment. The new substation and other projects will help reduce power losses and keep voltage stable, issues often faced in less populated regions like Jaisalmer. With new projects planned and ongoing, Jaisalmer is indeed set for a major boost in its power infrastructure, aiming for a more reliable and greener energy future.
