A New Chapter for Bihar’s Sports Story

Bihar is set to welcome a major international sporting event, as the city of Rajgir prepares to host the 12th Men’s Asia Cup Hockey tournament. This marks a significant moment for the state, as it will be the first time Bihar stages a tournament of this scale in men’s hockey. The event is scheduled to take place from August 29 to September 7, 2025, at the newly built International Hockey Stadium within the Rajgir Sports Complex in Nalanda district. This step shows Bihar’s growing role in the world of sports.

Big Steps in Sports Development

The decision for Bihar to host the Men’s Asia Cup Hockey highlights the state’s big steps forward in building top-level sports facilities and its goal to become a major sports center. The Rajgir Hockey Stadium, where the games will be played, is a world-class venue. This stadium is part of the State Sports Academy-cum-Bihar Sports University. This event follows the successful hosting of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in November 2024, which was also held in Rajgir and saw India win. These events show India’s strong focus on improving its sports buildings and Bihar’s increasing importance as a place for sports.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The hosting of the tournament is a result of good teamwork between Hockey India and the Bihar State Sports Authority. A formal agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was signed between the two groups to make Rajgir the host city. Leaders from various sports bodies and the government have spoken about the importance of this event.

“It is a matter of great pride for all of us that Bihar is hosting Hero Asia Cup 2025,” said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He also mentioned that such events are vital for promoting sports and helping young talented players in Bihar.

Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey shared his thoughts, stating, “The stadium is of international standards. I am confident it will provide an exciting atmosphere for players and spectators alike.” He also thanked the Bihar government for their ongoing support in promoting hockey.

The Additional Chief Secretary for the Department of Sports in Bihar, Dr. B. Rajendra, expressed that hosting the Asia Cup is a proud moment and shows Bihar’s commitment to becoming a leading sports place.

Secretary General of Hockey India, Bholanath Singh, added that the tournament will not only show the best of Asian hockey but also give a big push to the sport in India and the region. He noted the growing interest in hockey in Bihar and believes this event will inspire many young players.

Indian Hockey Team captain Harmanpreet Singh also expressed his excitement to play at the new stadium in Rajgir.

The Teams and What’s at Stake

The 12th Men’s Asia Cup Hockey will feature eight top teams from Asia. These include powerhouse hockey nations like South Korea, India, Japan, China, Malaysia, Oman. Bangladesh. South Korea is the current champion. Originally, Pakistan was expected to participate but withdrew due to concerns, with Bangladesh taking their place. This tournament is not just about winning the Asia Cup trophy. It also serves as a direct qualifier for the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, which will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. The team that wins the Asia Cup will earn a spot in the World Cup, making the competition very intense as teams aim for both the title and a place in the global event.

Looking Forward to a Grand Event

The excitement for the tournament is building. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially launched the event by unveiling the mascot, named ‘Chand’. the tournament trophy. He also started a Trophy Glory Tour to kick off the countdown to this crucial event. The choice of ‘Chand’ as the mascot is meaningful, as the tournament starts on August 29, which is National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. Officials expect a large turnout for the event. The Director General of the Bihar State Sports Authority, Ravindran Shankaran, shared that it is believed about 20,000 people will come to watch this big sports show in Bihar. This high number of visitors will help the local economy and put Rajgir on the map as a global sports city. The hosting of this cup is expected to provide many benefits, including setting up more sports buildings in the state.
